What sets apart is our local knowledge & personalised approach
Led by Sam Rasmussen, our Tweed Heads team brings decades of combined accounting and taxation experience to clients across the Northern Rivers, Gold Coast and surrounding regions. Previously been part of a well-established local firm serving Murwillumbah and the wider area, our team has built strong relationships within the community and developed a deep understanding of the local business and investment landscape.
We work with a diverse range of clients, including self-funded retirees, SMSF trustees, property investors, farming enterprises and small business owners. Whether you're managing a growing business, building wealth through property, or planning for retirement, our team provides practical advice tailored to your individual circumstances and long-term goals.
What sets us apart is our local knowledge and personalised approach. We understand the unique opportunities and challenges that come with living and investing in a cross-border region, including the complexities of property ownership, taxation and business operations across NSW and Queensland. By taking the time to understand your needs, we deliver clear, proactive advice designed to help you make confident financial decisions and achieve the best possible outcomes.
Most state taxes (stamp duty/transfer duty, land tax, payroll tax) apply based on where the asset is or where the activity occurs, not where you live. So your residential state matters less than the location of your business, the employee work location or property. Cross-border situations need careful mapping. We can help.
Each state has its own land tax thresholds and rates and transfer duty rates. Owning property in both states means navigating both sets of rules. Specific considerations include land tax thresholds apply, and timing of any sales.
GST is national, so cross-border doesn't matter for GST. State taxes (payroll tax, land tax) apply based on where the business activity occurs. Workers compensation insurance is state-based. Workers and contractors based in different states create specific obligations. We work through the implications.
Fringe Benefits Tax is federal so the rate is the same nationally. The administration depends on where the employee is based. Cross-border employee benefits (cars, accommodation, allowances) usually follow the employee's base location for FBT reporting.
The fundamentals are the same as elsewhere: choose the right structure, register for GST if needed, plan tax timing, separate personal and business finance, and use the small business CGT concessions where eligible. Cross-border location adds some complexity around state taxes and workers compensation but other major considerations are consistent across all state (super, CGT, etc).
The location of business registration matters less than where the activity actually occurs. State payroll tax thresholds and rates differ between NSW and QLD. Specific industry licensing may also differ. We can help you assess the right structure for your situation, including whether incorporating in one state or the other creates any advantage.
Case study 1
Situation: A client was selected by the ATO for an income tax audit and asked our firm to manage the process on their behalf.
What we did: We acted as the client's representative for the duration of the audit, working with their records to assemble and present the information the ATO requested in a clear, well-organised format, and handling the correspondence with the auditor.
Outcome: The audit was completed efficiently and resolved in the client's favour. The auditor commented that it was the best-presented audit response they had received, which made their job much easier. This undoubtedly contributed to the prompt and favourable outcome. This case highlights the significant value of maintaining accurate and comprehensive records.
